The radius rods of your '36 are VERY different than a '40. They will NOT swap to the '40 axle housings.
John Connelly can make you a proper '36 housing for a reasonable price.
As has been advised... call the man. He's a good guy, one you can trust.

If you swap the entire rear end assembly including driveshaft, torque tube, radius rods, etc. it will fit in. If you want juice brakes and the rear end includes them then you have a bonus. If you are going to use the mechanical brakes you will have to deal with the rods, etc. Not sure how easy that would be.

The '40 Columbia will fit into the '36 with a few modifications. Use the '36 banjo and torque tube with the '40 Columbia, axle housings, ect., you can use the '36 drums. You will need '37-38 radius bars, which will bolt to the '40 axle housing and be long enough to attach to the torque tube behind the trans.
If you are going to keep the mechanical brakes you will have a problem, I would suggest 42 -48 brakes with 38-39 drums if you want to keep the original wide 5 wheels.
I have a 47-48 Columbia under my '36, hooked up using the above parts, no welding, machining, ect. I used the '46-48 electric over vacuum for the shifting controls, works very slick.

  A foote-note to my earlier comments about a '40 Columbia in a '36.
The '36-40 have the same axle width, the '42 -48 is 2" wider. It is a common belief that the '42-48 axle housing have to be cut down to use in a '36. It has been my experience that the added 2" of a '42-48 does not present a problem that justifies the expense and work to cut the axle housing down.. Think about it, an inch on each side is nothing.
Of course if a person was going to run over-size tires, the added inch on each side could present a problem.
