I looking to get my steering box rebuilt or new one. Anyone know where in the Redding, CA I can find someone to R & I the work and including fixing mine or getting a new one? I have replaced the King Pins, etc.

I don’t have a source for you, but I do have a recommendation as to what to look for: the 1936 steering box was the last of its type, being replaced in 1937 with a superior design. This design was used, I believe, through 1939, and is a bolt-on improvement well worth the investment in drivability and resale value. If, however, you are working on a low budget, I’d look for a ‘36 unit in good condition rather than rebuilding one, as there must be a few early take-offs in boneyards near you. Alan

I am in the process of replacing my '36 steering gear with a '37. You can have my '36 parts for postage if that will help you. I am keeping my '36 steering shaft and pressing the '37 worm gear onto it. I'll take pictures along the way and get them posted. skennedy@ecentral.com

The '37 box will connect right up to your linkage. In fact the '36 pitman arm will also go on the '37 box. I believe you will have to re-drill one hole in the mounting bracket to get it to bolt up.

1936 was the ONLY year with needle bearings, they were/are a dismal failure. It is very easy to convert to a much better 37/39 box. You do not need to change the mount plate it can be reworked to fit very easy and with the addition to the 37 up box use 1/2 synthetic doping/ 1/2 synthetic grease and you will think you have power steering

I would suggest that you not waste the time rebuilding a '36 steering box.. I upgraded my '36 to a '40 steering box in 1955, what a difference, it is almost like adding power steering compared to the '36 worm sector type of gears. If you want to retain the original horn button and rod for same, you will need a '37-39 box, the center hole in the '40 box will not accommodate the rod, only enough room for the horn wire. If you are building a concourse type of a car that could be an issue, for an every day driver it is a great improvement. If you are dead set on rebuilding your steering gears, I would suggest that you pickup a re-buildable unit, have it rebuilt before you tear your car down. I have a complete 36 steering gear assembly that has been sitting in my garage for over 40 years. the shaft turns quite smoothly, the unit came out of a 36 station wagon. Bill 36 5 win delx cpe
