Today I removed the radiator hoses on my 40 and was suprised that the thermostats don't have a retainer holding them in place. Are mine missing a part?

they just lay in the water outlet in the head and the hose holds it in place, make sure the heat expansion element is facing down,
hope this helps, 37RAGTOPMAN KEEP ON TRUCKIN,,,,,

Some of the repro stats are not large enough to stay put in the hose. In that case, an additional clamp above the stat will keep is secure and right side up.

Thanks, thats what I wanted to know. I guess the water flow holds it in place.

Wolfie, No, the water flows out, not in. As the others said, the hose prevents its movement, and if you have a repop with a smaller diameter, yiu'll have to use an additional hose clamp or improvise a larger diameter to hold it secure.

The hose is smaller than the thermostat, but I think Super's idea of using a hose clamp above to ensure it stays in place is a good idea.

You could make a ring to set in the hose above the thermostat that would be tight in the hose. that would save putting an unsightly clamp on the hose. Gail

You can drill very small holes in head & stat & wire down with ss wire.Works for me

I used a piece of thin wall copper pipe about 1" in length and the inner dia. of radiator hose. Slide that piece in hose and the stat woun't slide out.Works for me.

Many minds have come up with creative fixes for my thermostat question. Thanks for the ideas. Any more?
