Topic: Overdrive Solenoid Question

  New guy here. I have a 53 customline all original stock. Changing out the 3 speed for a ford 3 speed with O/D. Original 6 volt. I got a solenoid with the transmission that came out of a 55 t-bird. The solenoid should have 2 wires coming out of it, but it only has the one blue. Anyone have any idea where the other wire attaches. Thank you in advance. Steve

  See attached wiring schematic for the OD system. Hopefully this helps.

  As the schematic shows, the solid blue wire is the power in wire to activate the solenoid. The solenoid should activate wth power to the blue wire with the case grounded. The missing wire goes to a grounded switch that temporarily shorts the ignition for kickdown. If the solenoid is operational, the OD will kick in without the 2nd wire, you just won't have the conventional kickdown into straight drive.

  Thank you very much for the replay and the diagram. I tried to test it and it indicates dead short. If you look close at the center picture there are two wires coming through the plate soldered together to become the blue wire. I am thinking it should be the larger blue and the smaller the red? Or would one be the pull down and the other the hold down?
I will separate the two and retest.

  It means the governor's speed (vehicle speed as it is driven by the transmission output shaft) is below the speed needed to close the contact and complete the ground circuit. Completing this ground allows the relay to energize the solenoid. Usually the minimum vehicle speed is around 27mph although this has been known to vary (Borg Warner stated 20-32 mph depending on vehicle manufacturer).
