Topic: What this hole

gmcbuffalo    -- 10-25-2021 @ 1:41 PM
Enclosed is the timing gear cover to my 1935. It’s an early 35 since it had Babbitt bearings. My question is what is the hole at about 2 o’clock in the photo of the distributor mounting area?

Something someone added and should not have.

Could it be used to dump oil back into the engine from a canister head mounted filter?

I would change the cover, LOOKS like it could be oil leak to me.
it was probably a oil return, that someone did years ago, not the way to do it,
the original filter kits had a special hollow bolt and banjo fitting,.
this was used on the top RS to hold the distributer on and return the oil.
this was what should have been used,
my 2 cents 37Ragtopman

  I'd also change covers.

It also appears, might just be the photo, but the distributor drive slot seems worn or something. It should be just off center but the same width for the whole slot. Hoping it is an optical dilusion. 42oink
