I just purchased the car last week. I was told to use 30 wt. I am thinking of getting Valvoline VR1 as it has ZDDP in it. I use 10w30 in my Model A.. any suggestions from you owners. This engine was rebuilt with few miles on it. I was also going to add some Lucas oil treatment or Marvel Mystery Oil. Looking for your guidance. David….

h*llo, welcome, as a '37 flathead owner lately iv'e been using 10w30 oreilly conventional 3.99 qt. because without a filter i change oil 500-800 mi intervals not sure when my flathead was rebuilt but some oil goobers still roll out of pan when i change it. i was using 10w4o at first thought i'd try 10-30 hols better oil pressure than 10-40 no sense recyl expensive oil these are not the cleanest running motors. good luck,Tom.

In my Flatheads, I use Pennzoil SAE 30 weight detergent oil with Redline Engine Oil Break-In Additive. This additive is used to provide the correct amount of ZDDP to protect the valvetrain components from excessive wear.

If you are going to use VR-1, DO NOT use any additives. Remember , the valve spring presure is low in these engines. Oils today are much improved over the oils of yesteryear. Change it often and you will be fine.

I use 10w-30 oil in my cars because it gives better lubrication at start up than 30W. I don't worry about the ZDDP because my cars are not stressed like racing cars and the improved wear additives in current premium oils should be sufficient. In my opinion, buying cheap oil because you change it often is false economy. The more expensive oils have better detergents, better temperature stability and better anti-wear additives. I started using Mobil 1 full synthetic in my 1953 Lincoln a couple of years ago and I am impressed with the quietness of my engine since I started to use it. I have also noticed an increase in performance and a slight increase in gas mileage. I attribute those changes to better valve action. The Lincoln has a tendency for sticky valves and lifters. The synthetic oil seems to solve those problems. I have not changed my Mercury to synthetic yet. I have only put 200 miles on it since 2019, due to Covid restrictions and the time that it spent in the body shop after Auburn 2019. I intend to do it in my Spring oil change, if the Covid restrictions allow us to have more local events. "Same", if you are getting sludge coming out when you drain your oil, you might look at your driving habits. Sludge builds up from not running the engine long enough to bring the oil to the optimum driving temperature. It usually takes about 30 minutes of stop and go driving or 29 minutes of highway driving to reach that temperature. Tom

Hey Tom,thanks for the heads up about warming up completely. sludge goobers when draining oil are less than when i purchased 2 yrs. ago. i believe i'm the 3rd owner. the pevious 85yr old that owned before me bought the '37 in 1956 and without never being able to tralk to him because his daughter after he passed on had sold the car to classic car dealer. i have a boat load of receipts that came with car that helps me understand the history of car. just don't know his driving habits other than the $ 18,000.00 the gentleman had spent on the'37 spanned about 4 thousand miles during hi ownership. the car now has 77,000 mi. i'm 71 yrs. old and i like working on it myself but with my physical limitations and not having a hoist not crazy about dropping oil pan and cleaning. my son has helped with a couple repairs. iv'e been under car numerous times to cnge oil, drain and fill,trans,and rear diff.,grease,adjust brakes,install carb,and other things. when i was working on my Harleys i quit working on my other daily drivers. actually the '37 is a daily driver which i get out nearly every day for an hour. i still love the soud of the older harleys especially evos. the song of a good runnin flathead is an eccellant substitute. sorry to go on and on.thanks,tom,from another tom.

Hey Honness, i have a'37 deluxe fordor hump back sedan. i dont think i mentioned that i use 4oz. of Lucas zddp with the 10w30 conventional motor oil at changes every 500-800 mi. i also drive the car allmost every day about an hour. it's not a show car. dash still has orig wood grain,dash lights work but dim,new carb last summer,has had head liner and interior redone with orig style fabric. everything works. i have done all maintainence and service grease and oil myself carb replacement. i don't know if you my reply to someone else about making tailights brighter. well i used standard 1157 bulbs but with an addition cupcake aluminum liners they totally surround bulb and fit perfect in tailight buckt. its similar what Mart on Ford Barn. good luck with ur '37,Tom.
