What was the technological development which precipitated the automotive shift to 12 volts?

In the early 1950's the electrical load requirements of the cars became too great for an economical 6 volt system to handle properly. The loads for cars equipped with electrically powered windows, seats and other accessories overpowered the 40 amp, 6 volt generators in common use at the time. To provide adequate current capacity to operate all of the commonly installed electrical equipment, the change was made to 12 volt systems on American cars in the middle 1950's.
