I am trying to install my steering wheel on my 1940 Ford. I have the woodruff key inplace but the steering wheel will not go down far enough to start the steering. wheel nut. It is like the woodruff key is to large. The steering wheel fits down fine without the woodruff key. Are there different size woodruff keys? Any other ideas or tips? Thanks for any help

Sometimes the key is hard to insert fully so take a C-clamp and try to press it in place until it bottoms out.

HI is this a original wheel ? or a reproduction, , check the groove in the wheel how deep is it, and does the key way fit in the wheel ? now install the key way in the shaft, how far does it stick out, they should be the same or close, if it sticks out to far you will have to trim it down or replace with the correct one, there many different key ways, is this the ORIGINAL KEY WAY. ? Use a fine file to remove any burrs on the key and in the slots in the wheel and the steering shaft so that you know that the key fits both without having to apply force.
