I own a '34 Ford which is largely original. Sometime over the years a previous owner swapped the aluminum cylinder heads for steel and I am in the process of replacing them.
The passenger side cylinder heads are scarce, but I came across this one in usable condition (pictured). The part number stamp has the letter "R" after the numbers 40-6049. This seems unusual; is this a Ford head? I am wondering if it could be an aftermarket replacement part. Thanks.

Ford production heads have the part number indented into the casting and some have raised numbers, none are stamped. Typically Ford heads with part numbers with suffix R are made after production as replacement. IMO the head shown is improper for an original 34 and most likely an aftermarket head. The head shown appears to have a manufacturer mark (circle with C inside ) Ford heads with manufacturer indication are a circle and a number ( 1, 2 or 3 inside).

Has any body had their aluminum heads welded? I took one off that had coroded around a water passage an got to close ot the combustion chamber and leaked. I think those corroded areas could be alumawelded and then resurfaced to last another 87 years? Have any of you guys done that?

I’m not a ‘34 expert, but I’m with 40 coupe. The lack of Ford script, the mold mark dots, the R, and the apparent part number stamping all point to aftermarket.
About welding an aluminum head, tig should do an acceptable job, but warpage issues will require consideration also.

With respect, no Ford cylinder head, V8 or four-cylinder had Ford script prior to August, 1934 and no '33 aluminum V8 head had a part number until a cast iron version was released late in that model year. The cylinder head in question appears to be a typical '33 head with a service part number stamped on it post production. There's really nothing on the head to distinguish it from a used-in-production head except for that stamped-in number.

I am assuming the "R" designates "replacement". Did Ford or the Ford dealers stamp "R or L" at any time to indicate side for the 21 stud heads?
