Topic: Speedometer lubrication

The speedometer cable in my ‘36 pickup had torqued itself apart about 2” above the torque tube connection. I’ve taken everything apart. The speedometer itself was stuck so I used Q-tips and solvent to clean the working components. Now the speedometer spins freely. I got an NOS cable and have flushed the cable housing as much as possible and cleaned the gear assembly that bolts to the top of the drive shaft. I plan on using 3-in-1 oil on the gears and shafts in the speedometer itself and graphite lubricant on the cable. I’m looking for guidance on how to best lubricate the gear that sits on top of the drive shaft. Should I use grease or a heavier oil? Thanks!

There is usually enough grease and oil on the driveshaft to keep the "turtle" lubed without pulling it.
