hey folks, whats the best way to find history of my '37 fordor. i'm just curious. far as i know i'm the 3rd owner. i think it was purchased new in iowa and the older gentleman before me owned it since 1956. thanks, tom.

The only thing a VIN (in your case: serial number) is going to tell you is when engine was builtand installed. Try Van Pelt's website. Paul in CT

With respect, no records survive of when a particular engine/transmission assembly was installed in a vehicle chassis. The surviving record is of when the engine/transmission were manufactured. At a minimum, except at the start of 1932 V8 engine/vehicle production, the normal time gap between those dates could range from two weeks to two months depending on which assembly plant where the vehicle was built ranging from Dearborn (next door to the only engine plant) to both coasts and the existing in-plant inventories of engine/transmission assemblies. Just-in-time supply of the assembly plants did not exist at that time.

You could try posting your info and request on the Ford Barn or other vintage car sites in the hopes that someone will recognize you car and provide some past owner details. Other than that you are SOL. Even if your DMV had any history which they probably won't due to established purge/destruction schedules, they won't provide any info due to privacy laws. ______________ No signature

Unless the previous owner kept any records from whom he purchased it your in limbo. Most, if not all, RMV's will not provide you with previous owner information due to privacy laws. As previously stated Serial Numbers (today's VIN) will only tell you in what sequence the chassis, engine/transmission were assembled. Ford factory records for a specific year provide when production started and with which number and when it ended ended with a which number. Your serial number will tell you approximately when it was manufactured that year. The window glass bug (if original to the car) also provides a month and year a clue for you.
