Can I replace the dingy odometer drum (00000-99999) in my '40 Ford (standard) with the excellent main odometer drum I found in a'40 Deluxe speedometer from my stash? The speedometer in the car works fine and I would rather not take it out until I have a good replacement for the drum. Thx.

Ford used a couple of suppliers for the speedometer. I would check that both of the speedos were made by the same company. I believe the Std and Dlx odometer have a different number of digits.

Right again, 40 Coupe. The Deluxe has a five-digit main odometer plus a trip odometer below with four digits, one of which is the 1/10 mile. The Ford V8 has a single six-digit odometer with the rightmost digit indicating 1/10 miles. Thanks for focusing my attention on this. Interesting that the '37 standard model had a trip odometer but the '40 does not. I guess Ford was struggling to differentiate the two models in 1940.
