I recently picked up a really nice 40 Ford PU ...previous owners were all about cosmetics over mechanicals but it does run really nice. Problem is that it's 81 years old and a lot of things are way overdue for replacement. Motor and tranny mounts where flat! I replaced them. next task is replacing the front shackles, my question is how to do it. Will I need a spring spreader or is there another way/s? Thanks in advance.

it will be better to have a spring spreader, but I have done it with a jack-not very safe. you can rent a hydraulic auto body tool that will spread the spring or you can use a 1" all thread, nut, flat washer and a piece of pipe. location? pm me for pictures of my homemade spreader

hi if you want a NOS FORD SPRING, it probably weak,, you can try SOUTHSIDE OBSOLETE in MINN, Fred has them,. I bought one last year, these are a bear to replace for sure,. make sure you have a strong helper. if you use NEW original shackles, you may have to fit the shackles to the holes m.a.c.s.fabrication on EBAY, has a nice spring spreader, I had to shorten it by 1 1/4 in when using a new spring, under $150.00 does front and rear, hope this helps 37Ragtopman
