The 49-51 Ford Shop Manal recommends "S.A.E 80 (S.A.E. 90 in warm climates)". It uses the same type gear components as the 41 transmission.

You can use the 80/90 gear oil, but it must have an API rating of GL4 or lower. GL5 and higher can damage the brass parts in the trans. Tom

If you don't use the car in the very cold months, changing to 140W gear oil in the transmission will usually make shifting easier. This is because it slows down the rotation of the cluster gear between engagements, as well as reducing the usual transmission leakage.
