Topic: Wiring harness help

I'm restoring a '36 pickup and have been working on it for many years. A long time ago I bought new wiring harnesses and I'm getting around to installing the one for the lights/horn. As you might be able to see from the photo, there are three wires coming from behind the dash down to the base of the steering column. Two are yellow and one is black with blue stripe. I can tell that the black with blue stripe is from the instrument panel lamps. One of the yellow wires does have a very faint red stripe in it so I believe it is coming from the fuse to go to the rotary switch. I can use an ohm meter to verify the source of these three wires. My problem is understanding what the wires coming out of the rotary switch at the bottom of the steering column are for. My wiring diagram doesn't show a brown or white wire. I could probably pull apart the rotary switch and try to figure out where the wires go but if someone could give me some clues, it would be a great help. When I bought the harnesses a long time ago, I thought they were for a '36 but maybe they weren't. Thanks for your help in advance. Charlie Demarest

The colors of the wires coming out of the light switch seem to be different from the wiring diagram and the harness on Dennis Carpenter's web site.

It would help a lot to know where the other side of the wires, in question, are attached.

I was able to take the rotary switch apart and working with the schematic, I feel pretty confident that I have the correct connections on my wires. Soon , I’ll be able to put the power to the system and see how things work. Thanks. Charlie Demarest

I hope you received a wiring diagram with the harness. The harnesses sold for replacement usually contain some wires that are not necessary. This is because they are made to serve several years and models. The better harnesses follow the Ford color code, but many don't. If you don't have a diagram, I probably have one in my collection.
