Topic: 3 spd normal gear wear?

I have enclosed some pictures from my 29 tooth cluster gear set for an opinion on what is normal wear? The front of the low gear teeth are rounded with 2 teeth showing some chipping - the corresponding gear on the main shaft has round fronts to the teeth but no chipped teeth - my first trans so looking for advice on how much is normal.

If it were my transmission, I would replace all of the chipped and damaged gears, the synchronizers and all of the bearings.

Chipped gear teeth is beyond normal wear; I second carcrazy's advice.

that wear is not normal but an indication of abuse, dragging into first gear while still moving. I have seen worse, my rule of thumb would be no chipped teeth a slight rounding of the ends I run them

I've built a few of these early Ford 3 speed transmissions over the years, and if that cluster gear came out of a transmission I was rebuilding, I would not reuse it. Good used or nos '36 to '48, 29 tooth cluster gears are not that difficult to find. Two good sources for these transmission parts would be 3rd Generation Automotive in Tenn. or VanPelt Sales, in Ohio.

Rounding and chipping of gears is from "Grinding them" when a person shifts. A "little" rounding is O.K. ; you can get by with them; but chipped gears need to be replaced!! If you can afford it replace all rounded and chipped gears.
