Topic: speedo cable gear in 51 flathead

I have a 51 Ford F1 all original. I think my speedo gear in the trans that drives the cable needs to be replaced. How do I get it out of the tyrans. Carpenter has replacement nylon gears . Do I onscrew the houning where the cable enters. To do this, do I have to take up the floor board cover? Many thanks

did you unscrew the speedocable from the back of speedometer ?
did you check the speedometer that it not frozen, ?
you can most likely pull the cable out and see if it is broken,?
if the cable is ok , be sure to lube the cable before installing, use speedometer cable lube,
remove the drive out of the transmission, and check the gear, you can do this from under the truck,
they very seldom break,
make sure you count the teeth and replace with same one, try getting a original FORD part if you can,
my 2 cents 37 Ragtopman
NOW would be a good time to get a repair manual, MOTORS MANUALS are very good for learning

Many thanks. The cable is new (just got it from Carpenter) so I presume it is well lubed. The drive line turns easily in it. The speedometer is also brand new and the input drive socket works well. I can only deduce that the gear must be faulty, although I don't know what would cause it to fail. I think I will remove the gear seat from above, meaning I will take up the panel in the floor to access it. I spent most of today on my back under the truck (I am 81). and it is not so easy any more:)
