Topic: Frame number

I've been cleaning the front end sections of the frame on my 1937 4 door humpback. On the drivers side just behind the steering box I found a number stamped into the top of the frame. I was wondering if there is any information in this number, such as a date code? The number begins and ends with a star. The number appears to be I8-40b 7937. Thanks Mike

Go to VanPelt's website. You will be able to de-cipher from the info there.
The lower case b is most likely an 8.

The number is a sequential engine serial number starting with 18-1 in 1932. There is no specific date attached to it. And no other information as we know it today. However Van Pelt can tell you approximately what month the engine was built. Figure another month or so for the engine to get to an assembly plant and that is approximately when your car was built.

What is important to you is that number became the VIN number and should agree with the number on your title.

According to the book The Early Ford V8 as Henry Built It by Francis/DeAngelis :

1937 Fords built in June of 1937 carried engine numbers starting with *18-3,992,052* and
ended with *18-4,082,325*.

The small 'b' is an odd character. It appears to be a vertical straight line, like a small L. It also has a oval shape at the bottom. Makes it look like a 'b'. Not sure what it is. Maybe it is just 1 or a zero. Thanks Mike

The dates in the DeAngelis/Francis book are those of the engine manufacture, not of the vehicle itself.

There are no dates on the blocks, only casting numbers. The number on the frame near the steering box is what we refer to as the VIN number. If original the number should also be on the tranny and I believe the rear cross member.

The sequential production number is stamped on top of the left frame rail and found between the firewall and the front crossmember . They generally start with a star stamp and end with a star stamp. The number is also found on the top of the frame rail at mid chassis and on the the "kick up" of the rail just before the rear crossmember. The "b" is the number 6.
