Topic: sealed beam headlamps

I have a 1940 standard Fordor. I believe I read on this forum several months ago that the three little glass 'tits' on each headlamp sealed beam needed to be removed prior to installing the headlight bezel due to interference. Does anyone disagree with this, or can anyone confidently agree with this? If they require removal, what is the recommended technique? Thank you.

Yes, you should remove them to allow the headlight retaining ring to fit properly. I removed them by holding the bulb against a bench grinder and carefully grinding them off.

  Yes, they must be removed.
Drake was selling bulbs w/o the alignment nubs. Makes your life a bunch easier...

On my 42 there is enough clearance to install the retaining ring and leave the nubs in place. So I have left them and it works just fine. Somewhere I read that to be authentic for fine point judging the nubs were not there originally. Not sure what the judges would say about grinding them off as there still will be spots where they were.

Yes, that's true, but this guy has a '40. The headlamp bezels won't fit over the nubs.
And like the fit to your '42, my '66 Chevelle has plenty of clearance for the alignment nubs. Also irrelevant.

I bought a 6V Ford Ford Script head lamp from Bob Drake for my "46 Coupe, and it has no "nubs" or "tits" on the lens, but does have the Ford script on the bottom.
The P/N is: 01A-13007-6V. It is marked 60/50W, but no indication as to where it was made. They are also available in 12V, by putting the suffix as 12V.

  Gentlemen,
Thank you very much for your expertise. Looks like I have a grinding job on my hands. Y'all have a great weekend. Stay outta big trouble - a little is OK.
