Topic: Turn signal wires

Is 16 gauge wire okay to use to wire up my turn signals? I'm using a 1940's era aftermarket turn signal assembly that I recently refurbished in my '37 Fordoor with it's original 6 volt system. Only reason I ask is because I've read that the old 6 volt systems generally work better with heavier gauge wiring but wasn't sure if this extended to things like turn signal wires. I'm using the old marker lights that were used as turn signals on this car since the 40's. They still work! Thanks!!

It is probably OK, but the answer depends upon the wattage of the bulbs and how far the electricity has to travel.

I would do a test by cutting a piece of 16 gauge wire to about 20 ft and then connect one end to car battery and the other end to the bulb. Let the bulb burn for about 5 minutes and then feel the wire. If it is hot, you will have to go up to the 14 gauge wire.

If you already have 16 gauge wire installed, find the wire that is the longest (likely the right rear) and connect 6 volts to the end by the switch.

It is unlikely that the bulbs will burn for 5 minutes in normal use, so this would give you a safety factor.
