Topic: 1935 vs 36 Headlight lens clips

I recently discovered that there appears to be a difference between 35 and 36 Ford headlight lens retaining clips. Ordering from any of the parts houses they sell clips to fit either model but the rims on 1936 cars are wider. The “V” shaped clips listed for both 35 and 36 cars are much taller than the 35 model rims. I was missing a clip on my 35 so I broke down and made one using one of the originals as a guide. Does anyone know who is selling original 35 clips?

According to the 1935-36 Chassis Parts Book, 35 and 36 headlamp lens retainers are the same, part # 48-13061. I have seen slight variations between retainers, but that was probably due to different manufacturers or repro pieces. 1933-34 retainers were different as well as the 32.

I've found that some of the reproduction clips available today are not made like the originals and do not work as well as the originals.

I have just discovered that clips I have are for a 1934. They work great when you have all 3. Since my car was built in January 35, I’m wondering if Ford was using up inventory for 1934 models. This brings me to another puzzle. If the 35-36 clips are too tall for my headlight rims, is there any difference between 34 and 35 chrome rims? We know there is between 35 and 36 years. Specifically the width of the bezel. I know the O.D. is different. 33-34 lens is 9 1/8” and 35 is 7 7/8”.

As the photo shows from the left headlight on my 35 Ford, the 34 clips fit perfectly while the 35-36 clips are too big. To install the larger clip I would have to severely bend both arms down.

Okay problem solved. For anyone else as perplexed as I was, to install the 35-36 clips on a 35 Ford, you just bend the two arms of the clip down severely.

Please let me clarify!!! Your photo shows a 35-36 clip (48-13061) installed properly!! I don't know what that other large clip is. It isn't 35 or 36. Here is a photo showing the 2 styles of 48-18061 clips that I have found over the past 45 years. Style 1 is probably an early repop.

  Don,

That light-colored one in the photo is a recipe for chipping the edge of the lens; absolute repro junk.
