Topic: 39 Coupe Convertible rumble seat water drainage

terrymchale    -- 03-01-2021 @ 3:15 PM
I'm restoring a 39 Ford coupe convertible with a rumble seat. As with other rumble seat coupes, rain/wash water is allowed to drain off the rumble lid into the rear compartment and out through the floor (somehow). My car is missing the original drainage system and part of the rear floor, above the gas tank has been replaced. I am sure it is a simple drainage system but would like to see what/how it actually is configured. I have the 38-39 Ford Restoration booklet and have read everything I can google but have not found a diagram or picture of the original set-up. Can anyone direct me to a publication or website which can clearly describe how this works? (Oh, and I am located in Alberta)

When I Did our 38 rumble seat conv, I replaced the inner and outer rear pans with bob drake pans, after I had them welded in solid, I asked a guy about drains, he said from factory tey wasn't welded solid; but left gaps in them, so I drilled some holes in the lower places, for drains....(don't tell the judges)

OK, thanks. I am looking at what I have and what I could do, including drilling holes. It would be nice to know specifically what was there from the factory...I would feel better knowing this.

No idea how similar they are, but in my '36, I built a large aluminum pan and I put a drain in it to drain out an existing hole at the rear. I also cleaned the original floor, wire brushed it, guess it would have served as a drain, it was full of holes. Any I put lots of undercoating on it before I installed the aluminum pan.

Steve, yours is pretty much the same as mine and I am in the process of doing what you did. A portion of my rear floor pan has been replaced and everything there cleaned and sealed. I am designing a pan, like yours to collect and drain away the water that enters the rumble lid and will exit at the tail. I had hoped to find an illustration or diagram of the factory system for doing the same just to be clear what the original plan was. Somewhere there must be documentation illustrating the system (hope, hope). Thanks for your input!

  RUMBLE SEAT DRAINAGE.
on my 37 there is a piece sheet metal from side to side just forward were the water would fall,
I would say it is high enough so the rumble lid would clear it, when swinging open or closed, 4 inches,?
this stops the water from running forward to pass compartment,
the water would run out the back of the car, though drain holes,
this might be part of the seat riser, that hold the bottom cushion in place,!!
I cannot get to it, without removing the rumble seat,
last time I was in the rumble seat, I thought I would have to call 911 to get out,!!!
hope this helps 37Ragtopman

  also
the response with the photo
there are 2 support brackets that go from the rear pan and go to the back of the opening for the rumble seat are missing .
these are to support the back of the body,
go up along on the inside, out of the way
hope this helps, 37Ragtopman

Thanks for the input. I have a pretty good idea of how the drainage, just hoping I could find and actual illustration or diagram of how it came from the factory. With so much information out there on every other aspect of old Fords it would seem likely that somewhere the rumble seat floor and drainage would be documented. Hope to find it.

I have a Model A roadster with a rumble seat. Its been a long time since I have had the seat out to look at the floor and maybe Henry had some better idea when he built your car. But here is what I remember. The floor has a gutter pressed in it behind the seat. The gutter has several holes punched in it to allow water to run out.

I am going to make guess that P/N 91A-7644598 strainer, is the part that keeps the water from going forward. You could check with the Henry Ford to see if they have the drawing for the part. You will have to pay for the research and a copy of the drawing, even if my guess is wrong.

when I Restored our 38 rumble seat conv., it had enough of the piece left that stops water from going foreward, I made a new one using old for pattern, it was fastened to floor with screws, had a rubber seal under it, the front of bottom seat cushion sets on it, the cushion has a peg on each side, that goes in a hole on each side to keep it in place
