Does anybody know the number of pints it takes to fill the main gear box; and the number of pints to fill the Overdrive unit?? It is not listed in my Ford Work shop manual.

According to the 1949-1950-1951 Ford Passinger Car Shop Manual Transmission standard: 3 1/4 pints with overdrive 4 1/2 pints Note: with overdrive drain at two plugs, refill through transmission only.

Thank you for your kind reply about the quantity, but Randy Rundle, and everything I have ever read about overdrive says; You must fill the overdrive seperately, because the oil won't flow from the transmission, to the overdrive unit.That's why it has it's own filler plug, and drain plug. Just quoting the official Ford book dated Nov 24, 1950. Dont have overdrive (except on the shelf) so can't sight experience.

A member sent me a PM that said," I need to buy some books"- He was obviously referring to my reply about filling the main gear box, and the over drive separately. He apparently thinks You can fill them both through the main gear box! YOU CAN NOT!!, I've known that for many years, and I think anyone that disagrees with that, should call the "Transmission Whiz, VanPelt- He will surely back up what I said about filling them both separately! If you dont fill them separately,and only fill them through the main gearbox, with the total quantity, you will ruin the overdrive from lack of lubrication!! Regards, Steve Lee

This is copied from the Borg Warner overdrive manual issued by Borg Warner. There are some errors because it is copied from a PDF, but you get the message. "The transmission and overdrive unit are connected with oil passages so that the same oil is used. The same oil is used for both. However, certain precautions must be used in the filling, in order that the proper amount 0f oil may be carried. In making the initial filling. first fill the overdrive unit with the proper oil until oil runs out the filling hole; then replace plug. Then. fill the transmission with the same oil until oil runs out the tilling hole. and replace the plug. In subsequent filling (at each chassis lubrication). inspect the transmission only for oil level and fill as necessary. The manufacturer of the overdrive unit recommends only straight mineral oil, not the "EP" or extreme pressure types 01 lubricant, which are unnecessary for the overdrive. and may contain ingredients that will corrode or otherwise damage the parts, or form sludge. or contain solid matter in suspension which may stop the oil passages to the pinion bearings, resulting in serious and expensive damage to the unit. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MUST A LUBRICANT OF THE HYPOID AXLE TYPE BE USED IN THE OVERDRIVE." This message was edited by 40cpe on 2-28-21 @ 5:19 PM

40cpe has given you the correct answers. One source for the correct oil is NAPA. They sell the SAE 90W Mineral Gear Oil (API GL-1) in one gallon containers under part number 65-201. If your local store doesn't have it in stock they can order it for you.
