Topic: One last rope seal question 59ab

A while back I posted a question about proper rope seal installation in the timing cover/oil pan on my 59ab engine, and I appreciate all those who offered advice. A couple of you mentioned soaking the seal halves in oil for a period of time before installing them. So I'm wondering, what's the purpose of soaking them in oil? I'm using the commonly available white seals (Best Gasket brand) which seem to be impregnated with a white waxy type of substance. Because of this it seems to me that oil wouldn't even penetrate thru this waxy coating, leading me to think it'd be pointless to soak them in oil at all. Sorry for what I'm sure is a newbie question but this is the first time I've ever worked on something this old and want to make sure I do all this correctly. Thanks in advance for some clarification on this point!

I too questioned the need for additional impregnation, but did it anyway, but in my own way: I soaked it in hot oil, which may or may not have made any difference. I do know that it doesn't leak, and I do use Mobil 1 which is said to leak past any questionable seals regardless.
