Topic: Banjo Rebuild Lubrication

I’m starting to put my differential back together using Vern’s booklet as a guide. I’ve already installed the pinion shaft outboard bearing and the retainer with the two rivets. Before doing this I greased the bearing with Timkin wheel bearing grease. Vern says to grease everything as you go. But then I saw something on the internet that all the internal parts should only be lubricated with the same oil used in the differential (600w) because mixing the bearing grease and the oil will create problems.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Look to Ford Service bulletins for the rebuilding procedure. The pinion bearing preload is in inch/Lb. not foot/Lb. You will also find the correct lube information. It is NOT 600W. I bit of grease on the bearings is not going to hurt. Suggest jacking the rear end up and running for about 5 minutes, with the proper lubrication, before hitting the road.
