How in HADES do you get the shift knob off on my 1950 car?? , and how do you get the new one on???? Regards, Steve Lee

If it's like the later knobs, the only way I have found is to squeeze it with a pair of pliers and break it off. I have also used a Dremel tool and slit the side of the knob and it will twist off. Once off, see if the new one will just press on. As a general rule I have found that the repo knobs tend to have the hole a little larger in diameter. If it slips on too easily you may need to use a little clear epoxy glue to hold it on.

Did you try a heat gun ? it might work to soften the plastic knob to make it slide off, hope this helps, 37Ragtopman

No. I think I'm just going to paint mine: "On the car!" I don't want to have to epoxy the new one if it is too loose! If I really want to take it off, I am thinking that I hold a pair of pliers or something behind it, and smack that with a hammer to drive it off. I thought that they scr*w*d off. Silly me!! Steve, if you’re going to use force, do it in such a way that doesn’t also subject any other components to possible damage, as Tom has suggested in the first reply to your question. Alan

Possibly drill out the center and use a (bearing) puller ?
