On my car to move the front seat forward or backward there is a pull round metal knob of sorts under the seat on the left side. This “knob” is somewhat sharp with a cotter pin in the middle. My question is, when the car was new, was this adjuster a plastic knob of sorts, easier to grab and pull? I have not seen anyone selling a replacement.

This is a photo from driver’s side. Its more like a washer than a knob. Surely this is not original?

If I remember correctly the shaft/knob/cotter pin is actually the "equalizer" that makes both sides of the seat tracks move together. there should be a pedal like release on the front of the drivers seat that releases the seat to move--maybe that is missing. If it is then you could turn what you have to make the seat move.

Yes it is missing. To move the seat I had to pull on the washer and one side moved. Then to move the other side, you have to pull on the other washer to release the seat. I wish the front lever was being reproduced but I have never seen one.

You re showing part of the seat adjusting mechanism. There should be a lever on the front seat frame which has two rods. One rod goes to the left release mechanism and the other to the right mechanism. See photos.
