New member here. Just bought a 38 sedan but not here yet. When it gets here, and I go to have the car inspected for vin number, will the guy know where to look? where is the vin number located?

The vehicle serial number in on the top of the left, driver's side, frame rail just if front of the front body support. If the transmission is original to the vehicle it will have the same number stamped on a pad above the clutch inspection plate. You can find more information about the VIN number, and a lot of other things, on Mac Van Pelt's website, vanpeltsales.com.

Actually you can find the serial number anywhere along the exposed portion of the left frame rail from the firewall to the radiator. Depending on the condition of the car it may be very faint and covered with layers of grease and rust. Be very gentle looking for it as it may be lightly stamped and easily lost by aggressive scr*pping or sanding.

Rule of thumb .... across from the steering box, stamped into the frame.

42 wagon has the correct answer. As a LEO I verified many ID or VIN numbers during my career. I especially helped owners of old Fords. The ID # up through 1948 (except on 1948 pickups) was always on the top of the left frame rail. It could be found anywhere from the front of the firewall to the front crossmember. It just depended on who was stamping the number. All they were concerned about at the time of assembly was matching the frame # to the transmission #.
