Topic: Replacing the 1940 Ford Shift Lever Insulator?

RAK402    -- 01-15-2021 @ 9:33 AM
I am going to be removing the steering column on my 40 Deluxe Sedan in the next couple of weeks.

I want to replace the Shift Lever Insulator while it is apart.

Can anyone describe the procedure?

Thank you all in advance.

Once you remove the shifting tube from the column you will see the end of the shift lever extend into the tube. The end sits on a metal cup which in turn holds a spring. The lever itself is held to the side of the tube with a roll pin. You will drive out the roll pin to remove the lever in order to replace the rubber insulator. The spring and metal cup are under tension, so be very careful as you remove the lever as the pieces will go flying. Put that end against something (the flat area of your vise or against the floor as you pull out the lever). It will save you looking all over the garage for the spring and cup(voice of experience).
