Topic: HOOD WON'T OPEN ON MY 1950 CAR

sarahcecelia    -- 01-09-2021 @ 4:04 PM
The wire broke, or the little piece wth the lock screw came off, and I can't open the hood.

I saw a thread, within the last month or so about someone this had happened to, and some nice guy replied and told him how to get it open.

WILL SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO GET IT OPEN!!!

Regards, Steve Lee

I remember that posting. Use the "search" function just above here on the right.

IIRC, the post was about a '51 car and the poster had to remove the grill to access the latch. The search function didn't find the thread for me using "hood" or "latch" as search words.

Here is a link to the one on a 49 Ford. It did show up on a search using "hood latch" as the search argument. Be sure to read the reply by Steve Sarahcecelia.

The thread I remembered was much more recent. The reason it doesn't show up here is that it MIGHT have been on another forum.

Edit: here is the thread I remembered, and it was on a '50 Ford

What wording would you use to search? I tried hood latch, hood won't open, broken hood release cable. and got no results.
I'm 83, gonna be 84 in March- and I'm not too good at this computor stuff -

Maybe you no how to search better than me; would you try for me when you can??

Steve, did you click on the links TomO and I posted?

sarahcecelia    -- 01-10-2021 @ 3:04 PM
Thanks Tom , but that guy didn't have a broken wire from the dash board hood release to the hood latch. What would you do? Your pretty knowledgeable about these 1950 cars; I am too, but never had this happen before! Take the driver's /side center grill bar out( the one in the middle)? Remove the entire grill? Think about if it happened to you, and give me some suggestions,PLEASE!!

I think this is the thread you're looking for. > https://www.earlyfordv8.org/forum/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=18&Topic=13800&keywords=hood%20release

Yes, I did. The one Tom posted was a guy with the hood latch being adjusted to tight, or stuck. He had a friend pull on the release cable, while he bumped on th hood a couple of times and it popped open; unfortunately, I'm in a different situation. My hood release cable apparently broke!

The other guy, on the Ford Barn got a bent ice pick (or something like one) , reached in through the grill, pulled the latch on the hood, and got it open. I'm going to remove the right middle grill bar, and see if somehow, someway, I can get my hand in there enough to somehow pull that release that the cable pulls, to release it to get the hood open. (I hope!)

Not sure if the 49-51 latch arrangement is different from the 42-48 ones. However on a 42 there is room to slide a screwdriver or similar tool between the fender and the hood and push against the latch to release it.

Steve, if memory is right, i took the "bullet"out of the grill and could get to the latch and trip it...been a long time ago.
Wish you well.

  hi Steve Lee

I had a 51 and I was able to release the hood by a screw driver,
when you get it open , BE SURE TO LUBE the entire assembly

my 2 cents 37Ragtopman
