Topic: Smitty mufflers

My 46 coupe has headers and dual Smitty mufflers.
I believe them to be about 10 years old. They are soft on the bottom. I want to replace them with a new set of Smittys but notice they are only about half the price of
original equipment type. Is that because they are junk, or because they are more simply made, with less baffles"

Also want to replace the rear hand brake cable because it has U shaped "adjusters" on both sides and probably was ordered too long. Is the connection at the wheel made externally, or do you have to go inside the backing plate?

Thanks very much.

Smitty mufflers do not have baffles, they are straight though. As to the quality of the current supply, I cannot answer your question. If you do replace them with new ones, drill an 1/8" hole on the bottom of the muffler near the front to prevent moisture accumulation.

To replace the rear hand brake cable, you must remove the rear drums to gain access to the cable. When you order the cable, also order the horseshoe clips that hold the cable to the shoes.

You might want to consider Brockmans instead: http://www.brockmancustomparts.com/page2.html

Thanks Tom - I may just leave well enough alone.

Thanks 4dfordsc - for the tip re Brockmans. they appear to be better quality just looking at the photos. A little more money but you get what you pay for. I think I will go that route.

You won't be sorry. The set on my '40 is 10+ years old and they're still going strong. Great sound, too.

P.S. They make nice Echo cans, too

I have always used regular glasspacks. They have a long life, sound good and are cheaper than some of the other name brand mufflers.

  I would go with Brockman's.
Give them a call. You will probably get the owner. Tell him the length, inlet size, outlet size and glass or steel packs. He will ship them in a couple of days at a reasonable price. After you install them, drill a 1/8" hole in the lowest point of the muffler.
