Topic: I950 Car Steering

With the car jacked up, I noticed, with a nice feel at the steering wheel, that the slightest movement of it, the wheels moved. Then while test driving it, I found that on a fairly straight road, it wandered just a little, and ! was always correcting just a little right ,and a little left to keep it going straight. (I had the alignment checked recently,It was all good to specs;) but I had to reset the toe, to 1/16" myself, after all this.

Is it the fact that there are not enough LBS. now to turn the steering wheel, It does feel a little free-er now and I have to reset that. Is that the problem, or is is my Bias tires?? If so are Radials the answer to this problem?

I drove a 1950 as my car ith early 50's,and drove it for about 2 years but don't remember how it steered.

Radial tires will definitely improve the steering capabilities and directional stability of the car. I have them on a '53 Ford and keep them inflated to 35 PSI all around.

  I agree on the radials.

For $800.00 plus tax, and mounting for 4 of them, they should do something!!

I re-set the lbs to turn the steering wheel, naturally with the front wheels off of the floor; to about 2lbs(-). It was too free according to the specs in the book. This may help some.

What size tires and wheels do you have on your car now? If you have 15" dia. wheels and you can be happy with modern black wall radial tires, you can mail order Goodyear Assurance radial tires from Tire Rack and have them installed locally by one of their designated installation dealers to keep the prices more reasonable.

Most Ford 1950 cars had 6.70-15 tires. The early 1950's cars, has 16 inch wheels and tires; they were left overs from 1949's.Henry did those things to use up the left over parts; but it was scamming the customers that got a 1950 car, with 1949 parts on them!

Case in point; 1949 v8's had a 4 blade fan, but if you got an early 1950, you might get a leftover 4 blade fan, when all the fans that were leftover were used up, then you got a 3 blade fan, that was supposed to be quieter, and had a little more pitch on the blades.

I absolutely wouldn't put black wall tires on my Crestliner. It was, and is, Ford's 1950 "Top of theLine" car!! ; but I may get those "Diamond" brand tires in white walls.

What brand do you guys recommend??

Have you checked all the bolts that hold the steering gear to the frame? There is one bolt in particular that passes all the way through the frame that can be weakened by rust, etc. and breaks. This can cause the steering gear to move on the frame.

I checked that bolt, after you mentioned it, thank you for that, and it was o.k.
