Most anti-chatter devices don't work and are a bandaid for the real problem. What year car are you having the problem with? Tom

A very bad clutch chatter. My car is a 1940 Ford and it has no anti chatter rod that Ford used to put on them. So I was looking for an alternative solution. Many years ago on some site, Rumbleseat used to give out very good solutions to problems with the old Fords. One was an anti chatter device. It was a bracket that hooked to the bottom two bolts on the trany, and a rod with a fitting that attached to the frame. He gave drawings on how to make it.

I have one of those devices that I bought NOS and put on my '38 with an 8BA. It didn't change anything for the better or worse. I took it off. If you want a picture I'll send you one.

40 frame should have the mounting holes for the anti-chatter rods. the holes should even be reinforced with a second piece of metal

Before you try installing an anti-chatter device, try replacing the front and rear motor mounts with new ones from Bob Drake. I just hope that they are the same quality as they were in 2017. Ah the infamous "slingshot" At least that's what old mechanic that looked at my car called it. A bracket and rod that attached to the transmission and frame. Didn't work. I think that back in the day they must have been sold by Western Auto and similar places. I think that chatter is a bug that Ford's engineers could never work out of the design. It only got worse as wear loosened things up.

Johncard, go to the 2 links that I included in my previous post. You will see that bad motor mounts will cause the problem and that all reproduction motor mounts are not the same. Replacing the clutch seldom fixes the problem, unless the pressure plate is deformed, or the fingers have not been adjusted correctly by the rebuilder. To check this, place a straight edge on the pressure plate housing and then measure to the fingers where the throw out bearing rides. The measurement should be the same for all 3 fingers. If they vary, remove the pressure plate and have it rebuilt. If you do replace your clutch, make sure that you relieve the pressure on the disc with wooden shims placed under the fingers on the pressure plate when you remove and install the clutch to prevent warping of the housing.
