Topic: 1937 Mod 78 water pump gaskets

Looking at the gaskets for 37 water pumps, I noticed two types. One has two holes for the pump and the other has only one for the pump. I'm curious as to why the difference and wondering which should I use? The one I removed blocked the lower hole in the engine. where there two different types of pumps used in 37. Looking thru my 37 book I found no indication that the mod 78 had different pumps.

The 37, 85HP water pump, used one gasket and all the four holes for mounting two at the top one in the center and one on the bottom. The additional top small hole is for an lubrication oil hole and the larger bottom hole is a coolant passage. Check your engine block it should have all of the above holes.

  40 coupe,

I was not very clear in explaining the gaskets I was looking at. In addition to the hole for the impellor there was an another hole about 2/3 that size at the bottom portion of the gasket. If you look at Mac's water pumps you'll see both gaskets. Sorry for the confusion.

If you look at the back of the water pump you will see a void in the casting in this area so the water pump and gasket could not seal in this area. Some of the gasket Mfg. do not remove the gasket in the area of the void some do. There is just one water pump either gasket will work.

  40 Coupe,

Thanks for the clarification. looking at pictures of the back of the pump it now makes sense. Thanks again.
