I have a 1936 Fordor Touring sedan. It started and then backfired through the carburetor. Now the starter will not turn over, not just slowly, just completely dead. It acts like it isn't getting any power. The starter switch was changed, same result. Any suggestion?

Use a voltmeter to check for voltage at the starter, if there is voltage there, the starter could be hung up on the flywheel. To release the starter from the flywheel, put the transmission in 3rd gear and rock the car backwards. If you hear a loud bang (like you destroyed the transmission) the starter should now work and you did not damage the transmission. Tom

If you don't have a meter, like me, a test light from NAPA for $10 will check for power to the starter. They work on 6 & 12 volt. Power at the starter is a good place to begin process of elimination.

Before going crazy on the electrical side are you sure the starter isn't jammed? Check to see if the engine is free by pushing the car back and forth in the driveway while in gear. Or try to remove the starter. Out of the car try bench testing it.
