Topic: Relocating the front seat in a 1940 Sedan...

RAK402    -- 11-02-2020 @ 9:13 AM
I have had my 1940 Sedan for 45 years now. I am 6'3 1/2" tall and not getting any thinner as I age. The front seat in the Ford has always been a bit uncomfortable for me, even when it is all the way back.

My son is about 4" taller than I am and cannot drive the car due to his height.

Has anyone made anything to move the front seat back and raise it up a bit to make it more comfortable for tall people?

I know its a strange question but I am getting ready to take it apart to get it painted and when I put the seat back in I would like to move it back and up.

Thank you all in advance.

  Hi RAK,
You may not be getting any thinner, but haven't you lost an inch or so in height? I believe it would be as easy as moving the mounting frame back an inch or two and installing spacers of an inch or so between the floor and the seat frame. Remember to consider the headroom you would be losing.

  RAK,
There were two designs of seat tracks in 1940. Most cars were equipped with the design that allowed some adjustment as may have been necessary.
The picture I've attached depicts both designs. Note the design at the bottom of the picture has removable "feet". Not only can these feet be moved fore and aft, they can also be moved up or down.
Hopefully this is the type you have.
I'm 6' 2" (210#) and have never felt cramped in a '40.

Good luck!

  I’m with you - 6’4” and pushing 300; “cozy” doesn’t come close

Thank you all for the responses.

Barney-I have lost a bit of height, but I am mostly leg, so that is where the problem lies-I am all folded up when driving.

Mike-I had not idea about the removeable feet! I will look to see which type of seat tracks my car has.

Jacques1960-Agreed sir!

Mine has the upper type and previous owner put 2" blocks under them, I'm planning to go a little higher, or get a seat cushion.

I did this for a friend, we used a 2" square tube for height and made it longer for length. He had the top set of tracks in Cub's picture. made it bolt in the original holes and then bolted the seat track to it. be sure and make it a strong connection.

Well, sadly, I have the non-adjustable front seat mount...I just checked.
