I think I'm going to have to ship my 46 out of state to get it worked on. Modern garages don't want to work on it and when I contacted the premiere restoration shop here the owner said, "Oh yes - 46 Ford, that has an automatic transmission - right?" End of my inquiry with him. Fed Ex has the good rep but a little expensive. Has anybody had good luck with or feel that can recommend another transport company? Thanks.

I would as the restoration shop for a reference to transport the car. Some of them provide this service and all of the good shops have experience with transporting cars. Tom

Professional transport can get very expensive, but others may have a bad rep. If you do go that way, be sure to get references, and check them. Contact your insurer to see if existing coverage is adequate, or if you need a separate type. If you are a Club member, using the roster, check with others in your area to see what they recommend. Perhaps you can find something close enough to haul it yourself. We rent an open U-Haul for that purpose. Easy and cheap. It is getting tough to find shops that will take old cars, let alone knowing much about them. We are booked up nearly a year on most extensive such jobs now, ourselves. We keep costs down by having the customer locate necessary parts and have them directly billed.

Is there a local V8 FORD CLUB in your state, I am sure if you belonged to a club you might be able to find out who works on them in your area, a lot of time memebers will be retired and want to earn a few extra $ and do pretty nice work, were do you live,? if you were in the VA, AREA, you could go to WWW MOTOR CARS, have restored many cars,they are in BROADWAY,the owners name is JACK,WENGER, They restored NO 43's Richard PETTY'S family,on his fathers PONTIAC STATION wagon,and had a write up in the AACA club magzine a few years back, knowing were you are located might be easier to know were to send you, JOIN A LOCAL V8 FORD CHAPTER, ARE YOU A NATIONAL V8 FORD MEMBER ? I had used Passport for YEARS (currently owned by FedEx) and had NO problems. They treated each and every vehicle extremely well. Very professional. Showed up when promised, handled each car / each time extremely well. Never had to offer any excuses... I took three cars to Dearborn in 2008. I decided to use Intercity as they were quite a bit cheaper. HUGE mistake. The lack of professionalism, poor condition of transport truck, etc. sickened me. The worst part? There was a small ding in the roof of one of my cars when returned.

2 things: 1) use enclosed transport only 2) only use a company that owns/uses their trucks A majority of the transport companies will contract with you and then takes bids from sub-contractors found in a database the haulers call 'central'. The company you are dealing with has no relationship or working knowledge of the sub-contractor who bids on his leg of the route. Your car may change trucks (normally open trailers to save money) numerous times. Often your car is dropped in a lot until the next sub-contractor picks it up for his leg of the route. If damage occurs while your car is sitting in the lot, good luck getting a settlement. Very often a owner will call the company he has contracted with and ask what is taking so long? The excuse is ALWAYS "Our truck broke down and we are waiting for parts". In fact, your car is sitting in a lot waiting for the next sub-contractor to pick it up. Let me know if you need a west coast reference...

I think you offer good advice. I ONLY use enclosed trucks and both FedEx (Passport) and Intercity own their own trucks. So, while your advice is good, it is not 'foolproof'. next time it's back to Passport for me. Another (approximate)$500 per car has proven worth it.

Thanks for all the good advice guys. To begin with, I called the last carrier I used only to find they are now out of business and a new owner has taken over. That seems to happen happen a lot. Also I have gone through the thing where the guy who picks your car up and the different guy who delivers it are "affilited with" the the company you contracted with - and both they and their equipment leave something to be desired. I think I will go with Fed Ex. About 400 dollars more each way but I'm sure I will sleep better nights.

I have used Passport, and Horseless Carriage. I would go with Passport in a heart beat. True professionalism and took great care of the car. Can't say the same for Horseless.
