So... through trial and error I've concluded that the braided cable is the positive lead. Is this correct? If so, I tried starting the car with the leads switched. The radio is not connected, so I'm not worried about tubes. But might I have caused other damage? Thank You, John

Yes, the braided cable goes to the positive post of the battery and the other end of it goes to ground (frame or engine if your car is original). I doubt that you hurt anything when you tried to start the car with the polarity reversed to negative ground....

Garrison, I'm sure you know that your braided cable is in very bad condition. You will have considerable resistance, causing low voltage to your starter, and poor charging from your generator. Also, if you have a voltage regulator on your firewall (not stock for '36), your reversing the leads may require polarizing your generator again. One more thing, double check your battery for height, as your replacement battery is likely taller than the original, and may interfere with the metal cover plate. Alan

The positive (braided) cable goes to ground on a positive ground system! The negative cable goes to your starter switch.
