The "correct" distributor for an 8 cylinder engine, 49-53, with the cast iron timing gear cover is 8BA-12127. The aluminum type is OBA. It may be from a big truck application or an industrial engine. A 7HA distributor came from a flat six, and wouldn't be on your car, but is the only 7 prefix I found.

I looked at the truck and car parts books, and there is no listing for a 7RA-12131. All distributors listed end in 12127. The only thing close is a 7RA-12127-C which was used on the earlier 239 V-8, the only difference from the 8BA-12127 being the springs that control the spark curve, and, of course, the tag with the part number. Could it be for an industrial engine?

it is an 8 ba engine. its not a truck motor.

I've just looked in the Ford Motor Company Truck Parts Catalog for '48 to '56. There is a 7RA 12127-C distributor assembly listed for 48/49, 8 cylinder 239 engine. It includes the notation "Use with 8BA 6059-C front cover. It would be "7HA" if it was for a six.

There is no part listed with the number 12131. There is a 12130 Distributor Housing Assembly - all for six cylinder applications.

Are you sure about that part number?

maybe it was a replacement factory part.

The distributor on our 1950 coupe's 8BA engine has the 7RA prefix.

It is an early production vehicle (late January or possibly February) with under 12,000 miles on it.

Could someone have changed the distributor ? Possibly, but I don't think so.
