Topic: Battery dash bolt

Jacques1960    -- 09-05-2020 @ 4:18 PM
On page 4-25 of the 1938-39 Ford book, there is a photo of the bolt which passes from the passenger side of the firewall through to the engine compartment to secure the battery clamp via a tab.

I’ve not been able to find this part in any of the year-appropriate Ford parts catalogue, but did find what appears to be a model A reference to this part.

Are these dogleg bolts available ?

Thank you .

  Jacques,
You just might find one somewhere, but it wouldn't do you any good except as a model for designing a longer bolt, as the correct LF battery is no longer made by anyone. The nearest replacement being the HF, which is about 5/8" inch taller, requiring a longer necked dogleg bolt. Also, the hold-down bracket itself has a bolt extending to the rear horizontally, which will no longer match up with it's intended location through the dash, so either that hole or the bracket must be modified. Only one other solution, that being to cut and lower the battery box itself, but I doubt anyone would opt for that idea.

The book gives the dimensions of the battery. and 4-26 1) indicates bolt dimension.
Try Michael at Third Gen Auto in TN or Fred at Southside Obsolete in MINN for the bolt you need.

MG, Good find! is it known what is inside those batteries? I must have been asleep, ‘cause I’ve not heard of a battery comparable to the Optima, which as you know has increased the height beyond being capable of fitting a Script case.

Are you referring to the battery or the bolts?

Well...maybe I got lucky; EBay seems to have changed its mind !

I think he is talking about the bolt that goes from the inside of car through firewall, to a tab on the back of the battery hold down, I used a regular bolt on our 38 conv. can't see anything but the head when installed

The bolt(s), which I may have managed to buy in Ebay. Already have the Optima battery and “service replacement” holder with tab to accept the bolt.
