The brakes are not power assisted so some pedal travel is required before the brakes are applied. You may just need to do a minor brake adjustment to bring the point of application closer to the top of pedal travel. Adjusting the brakes is relatively simple. You can use either a brake spoon (preferred) or a flat-bladed screwdriver to accomplish this. First make sure there is enough brake fluid in the master cylinder. Jack up all four wheels off of the ground and support the car on jack stands. Make sure that the parking brake is all the way off and that the parking brake cable is slack. Remove the rubber plug near the bottom of each brake backing plate and insert your brake spoon to engage with the star wheel brake adjuster. Turn the star wheel adjuster by moving the brake tool toward the axle while rotating the tire by hand to determine brake drag. When you have the brake so tight that you can't turn the wheel by hand, back off the star wheel adjuster by moving the brake adjusting tool away from the axle one click at a time until the you can rotate the tire with just the slightest bit of drag. Repeat this process with all of the remaining brakes. You want all of the brakes to be applied equally. After you are happy with the adjustments you have made, replace the rubber plugs in each brake backing plate. Check your brake pedal travel to be sure you have an adequate pedal feel. Lower the car to the ground and take a test drive to verify that the brakes are operating to you satisfaction. Add DOT3 brake fluid to the master cylinder so that it is about 1/2" from the top of the filler neck.
