I’m working on rebuilding a 59 AB engine and went to order thermostats and see that most everybody offers both a 160 and a 180 degree thermostat. Any thoughts or ideas on which to choose? I’m in Asheville, so not too hot and not too cold. Thanks!

Either is OK. 160 was original equipment. But I think most experts today would say that running the engine that cool is not the best for fuel combustion, or for burning off moisture and oil fume contaminants. I think 180 is the better choice. Keep in mind that the thermostat only sets the low point of your engine running temperature. A lower-temp thermostat will not help keep you running cooler on a hot day. On a hot day every thermostat will be wide open, and the limiting factors will be your radiator, fan, water pumps, etc.

I initially put 160's in my '46, 59AB, but found it ran too cold. I installed 180's, and that is as hot as it gets while driving, and doesn't go above that, even in slow traffic.
