If it is installed the same as the one I replaced on my '46 Coupe, I disconnected the cable at the hood latch, removed the cable and broke the knob off by cutting it a away with a pair of side cutters. I then installed the new knob with 5 minute epoxy. I also cleaned and oiled the cable before it was reinstalled. Check the wire where the ferrule clamps on, to see if the wire is badly nicked from the ferrule clamping screw. If it is, try to place the ferrule on a fresh piece of the wire, closer to the handle, if there is enough slack. The reason is, if the wire breaks when you go to release the hood, you are scr*w*d.

As 51 mentions, if you snap the wire, it's hard to get the hood open. I carry two plastic shims, the type commonly used to install doors and windows and a 1" x 12" piece of 1/8" flat steel in my tool box. If the cable snaps, use the shims to hold the hood up and slide the flat steel in and push on the realize lever. I know this because when the car was in the shop being painted one of the body men closed the hood, with out the wire attached and that's how I got it open.

What woodiewagon 46 says should work for any 42-48 car maybe some even earlier. Not sure about 49 and later after seeing some pictures recently of a later car that the owner was having problems getting the hood open after the cable broke.

My suggestion is to take a good look at your hood release and plan ahead.
