Topic: hood cable

  my hood release cable has broken or is pulled out on my 1950 shoebox. Any ideas how to get it open?

  Put a mirror in above the grill bar and you might be able to see how to open it on the underside of the grille moulding. Check and see if the center grille comes out easy. That might give you more room.

  If your latch is similar to the 42-48 you should be able to slip a long thin screwdriver in under the hood and push on the latch opposite where the latfh cable attaches and release the latch

  Thanks cliftford, I've looked at removing the grill and it can't be done with the hood closed.

  Overdrive. The hood on a '50 curls down at the front, and the release latch is above and back from where the release cable attaches. I think your only access may be to remove the splash pan #16550, which, if my thinking is right, should give you access to the front side of the rad, and hopefully to te latch mechanism as well. I don't know why the pic is sideways. Rotate 90 deg. clockwise and it is easier to read.

I had a 1951 what
I used to use a long strong screwdrive or a thin pry bar and slide in the hood crack and try moving the lever to the drivers side, this should do the job.

  After reading a similar post several years ago I ran a second cable from under my dash to the hood release on my 46 coupe. Now I sleep better.

  I think I read the same post as silverchief, so I connected a wire loop on the hood release of my '46 coupe, that I can get at from under the car, to release the latch with a piece of wood dowel if the cable breaks. I also removed the inner wire, as the hood release was really hard to pull. Cleaned off the rust, oiled and installed, and now very free to operate. The most likely place for a cable to break, is where the lock collar is clamped on the end of the wire. I had enough slack in the wire that I could place the collar on a "fresh" piece of wire.

  Back in the early 50's, a 1,000 mile lube job included oiling the cable and putting Lubriplate on the latch. Doing this on a regular basis, should keep everything free enough so that you don't break the cable. We used a very light oil like 3 in one on the cable and wiped the excess off.
