Topic: 6 volt volt battery testing.

I'm using a volt meter to check the condition of my 6 volt battery, what reading should I get when the battery is at full charge? My volt meter reads 6.25 volts now, should the reading be higher?
Thank You.

I'm not a battery expert, but from my mechanic days, a fully charged 6V battery ran 6.3 to 6.4 volts. Another test is with a hygrometer, assuming you have a "wet" battery where you can take the caps off and see liquid covering the cell plates. These hygrometers are available at most auto parts stores, and a specific gravity reading of a full charged battery would be 1.238 to 1.258. More important is a load test, which some auto parts stores can do, usually for free. At home, connect your meter to the battery and turn on the headlights. The voltage should stay above 6 volts.
