Topic: 6 volt charging

Will charging my 6 v ‘50 Ford at 8.5-9.0 volts harm the battery or anything else.? I have bought regulators from C&G, NAPA and Mac’s which do nothing. Seems like the Chinese can make regulators but have no way to adjust them.
The old used regulator I got from EBay charges at 8.5-9.0 volts across the battery. Field voltage measures 8.0 at engine idle and drops to 4.0 at fast idle all the while showing moderate current to battery on car’s ammeter and constant battery voltage of 8.5-9.0.
Also, is there any place I can send one of my new units for adjustment? No one here in Tucson has a clue.

You might try NAPA. I recently got one from them for my '39.
Eichlin VR401 made in USA. It might be the same number for your '50. The charging rate in a 6 volt system shouldn't exceed 7.2 to 7.4 volts. Are you sure your gauge is correct? I would try another tester to be sure.

Your voltage regulator should be set to give a max of 7.6 volts measured at the BAT terminal of the voltage regulator. Higher voltages will damage the generator.

I suggest that you use Google to find a generator repair shop near you. They should be able to adjust your regulator.

When I recently had my 6V gen rebuilt I took it AND the regulator to the repair shop. Perfect.
