Am missing what I assume is sound deadoning material in the triangle shaped recesses under the trunk lid of my '48. What is that material and where is it available?

Drake has it. He calls it 'waffle weave' insulation.
It's sold as I recall in 8' lengths. Three (3) feet wide. Two thicknesses are available. About $90 a roll.

The material is called "body insulation sheeting". Drake used to sell it in 3'X 8' rolls, either3/32 or 1/8" thick as item B-5010. (800/221-3673) Most of this material was glued to the underside of the deck lid before the stiffener was attached, making replacement very difficult. Usually, you have to cut pieces to fit around the stiffener, as the part under the stiffener is impossible to remove. I believe it was mostly to prevent the "skin" from drumming on the stiffener, rather than as an insulator.

I don't think it was really glued. It was placed between the outer sh*ll and the inner frame and then the edges were crimped. You have to cut almost each piece and work them in. Some times you can cover 2 areas with one piece. Some use a small piece of sponge behind to give it the puffy look. I did it with my car and it has stayed in place.

We have run into some that had a tar-like backing that was firmly bonded to the metal. Perhaps you will be lucky.

Hey Supereal you are right. The material was a tar like substance impregnated cardboard that was pressed in a like waffle pattern press. When the sun shone on the deck lid it did melt sort of
