You can use cedar blocks. Walmart sells them.

There is a current thread on this topic on the Fordbarn forum. (link below) The thread goes on for five pages! Everyone has an opinion on what works and what does not work. Most opinions posted were on what they found does not work, and there's some entertaining stories posted about that. There is consensus on one think that does work: get some feral barn cats to take up residence in your garage.

Hi....I have always used moth balls in cars (4) that I store for the winter in my barn. Also use d-con feeders. Never any problems. BT

The solution that seems to work for most people is to put the car up on jack stands so that the tires are more than 4" off the ground and put a small bottle of ammonia, with the lid off, by each jack stand. No animals like the smell of ammonia and will stay quite far away from an open bottle.

I had a critter problem when I moved into my current home in 1988 and just placed an open bottle of ammonia alongside of the overhead door tracks on each side of the door. I refill them every Sept and did not have any problems until the exterminator found the garage open and put some bait inside it. I found mouse poop on my car cover and then found the bait. I had to put a bottle of ammonia in the rafters to get rid of the critters. Now I make sure that the exterminator does not put bait inside of any structure.
