Topic: 1935 Fuel gauge

I've worked on several 34 fuel gauges and they all had the small wire (about 1 1/2 inches) inside the hex shape copper tube, but the 35 I'm working on does not. Is it suppose to have one. I think the wire somehow meters the flow of red liquid but not sure of it's purpose.

although I am not an expert the brass tank usually has the small rod, it usually does not come out with ease. I am not sure of the purpose and have thought it was sort of a "a brick in the toilet water closet" decreasing the volume of fluid in the brass tank yet increasing the height of the stored fluid. Since the fluid is about 4 times the weight of water the rod may also help move the fluid to the bottom of the tank as it is displaced by the air. The tank is made of brass and I would guess that brass rod would work. Although the Ford gauges seem to have only one rod I have seen new replacements with a couple pieces of wire the Ford gauge rod appears to be about 1/16 in diameter.
