A while ago, I replaced the rope seal on the front crank in my '39 Ford Standard with a late model 221 ci. I trimmed the rope seal and thought I had it correct, but now there is a substantial leak. Should I try the rope seal again or go with an upgraded seal provided by Mac? I'd appreciate any advice you may have.

The rope seal should not be trimmed before installation. This allows the compression of the seal as it is forced into place. When you trim the seal, the ends are exposed, allowing the oil leakage you mention.

I have had a modern type front crank seal on my car since the 1990' and have had no leaks. It is easier to install and provide good results. The rope seal will also provide good results, but needs more care to install. Tom
